An Acoustic and Articulatory Analysis of Vowels in Ningbo Chinese

چکیده

This paper examines the acoustic and articulatory aspects of vowel production in Ningbo Chinese. Frequency results show that ten normal-length vowels can be well distinguished by four levels of vowel height and two levels of vowel backness in an acoustic F1/F2 plane. Acquired EMA data show that there is no clear correlation between vowel height and articulatory parameters. Results from a PARAFAC modeling of measured tongue articulators show that the complicated tongue shape data can be successfully decomposed into two underlying lingual movement mechanisms, namely the “front raising” and the “retraction and back raising”. And both vowel height and vowel backness can be well interpreted in terms of these two underlying tongue movement mechanisms.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

بررسی ساختار سازه‌ای واکه‌های زبان فارسی در بزرگ‌سالان دوزبانه آذری فارسی

Objective: Vowels are the center of syllables while formant structures are one of the most important acoustic characteristics of speech sounds that help in their articulatory and perceptual aspects. Formants represent the shape and size of the vocal tract. There exist trivial differences between the vocal tracts of different people due to which the formant structures of a vowel in one person ar...

An acoustic phonetic analysis of dip

This paper describes the acoustic phonetic properties of diphthongs in Ningbo Chinese. Data from 20 speakers indicate that (1) falling diphthongs have both onset and offset steady states while rising diphthongs only have steady states on the offset element; (2) both falling and rising diphthongs begin from an onset frequency area close to their target vowels, but only the normal-length rising d...

Prosodic Boundary Effects on Segment Articulation and V-to-V Coarticulation in Standard Chinese

This paper investigates the prosodic conditioning of the segment production and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in the Standard Chinese through electropalatographic and acoustic analysis. The articulatory and acoustic measures were obtained for un-aspirated alveolar consonant /t/ and vowels /i/ and /a/. Results show that the domain-initial consonant is strengthened in a hierarchical manner in hig...

Articulatory-acoustic relationships during vocal tract growth for French vowels: Analysis of real data and simulations with an articulatory model

This paper reports on the articulatory–acoustic relationships involved during vocal tract growth. Data were taken from a database of ten French vowels uttered by 15 speakers ranging in age from 3 years old to adulthood. Despite the important acoustic variation encountered, one feature is displayed by all the speakers: the production of extreme focal vowels /i/, /u/, /]/, and /y/, realized with ...
